ACADEMIC DRESS
- Gowns
The gowns of staff members of the Tshwane University of Technology shall be the gowns specified by the institution that conferred their qualifications.
Academic dress shall be worn at:
- Graduation ceremonies
- Inaugural lectures
- Academic opening ceremonies
- Official functions of other higher education institutions where the Tshwane University of Technology is officially represented such as the inauguration of a Vice-Chancellor and graduation ceremonies
- Functions where the invitation indicates official dress
- Faculty colours
Faculty colours may only be used for hood and academic dress distinction at graduation ceremonies and other official academic functions.
The colours are:: Only one color (Maroon)

Butternut Faculty of Management Sciences Steward Blue Faculty of Science Adonis blue Faculty of Information and Communication Technology Dove Grey Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment Sage Green Faculty of the Arts Union Jack Red Faculty of Humanities Maroon - Bonnets and Caps
Bonnets or caps shall be worn with all academic dress.
The colours of the bonnets and tassels are:
Chancellor black bonnet with gold coloured tassel Vice-Chancellor black bonnet with gold coloured tassel Deputy Vice-Chancellors red bonnets with silver coloured tassels Deans black bonnets with tassels in the colour of the faculty concerned Registrars black bonnets with silver coloured tassels Honorary doctorates black bonnets with gold coloured tassels Doctorates red bonnets with tassels in the colour of the faculty concerned All other qualifications black caps with black tassels - Hoods
Graduation hoods shall be of a design approved by the Council after consideration by the Senate and shall be in the colours of the faculty concerned.
Only the hood of the qualification that is conferred and the hood of the previous highest qualification conferred shall be worn during ceremonies.
Persons who receive national certificates and national higher certificates shall not wear a hood.
The University of Technology’s functionaries shall not wear a hood, while the other Tshwane University of Technology staff members shall wear the hoods specified by the institutions that conferred their qualifications.
